Here are
some pointers for shipping
a seat to Bike Solutions LLC
The box size we use is 36 x 20 x 15. Since a box this size is hard to
come by, many people send in seats made up of two boxes taped together.
The box you send your seat in does not have to be pretty. All the seat
needs is a layer of protection inside using bubble wrap or packing
peanuts. If you use packing peanuts, you must place the seat in either
plastic wrap or a garbage bag since the peanuts will stick to the vinyl.
It is very difficult to clean this residue off, and Bike Solutions is
not responsible for removing this residue.
The shipping box must be at least 36 inches long. We have received seats
packaged in boxes that are not long enough, and this can damage the nose
of the seat. The nose of the Gold Wing seat is very easy to bend, and if
the box is not long enough, the nose will bend upwards. This causes the
plastic seat pan to take a permanent set to this position. When the nose
bends this way, you will have a 1/2 inch gap between the nose of the
seat and the gas tank when you reinstall the seat. Bike Solutions is not
liable for seat damage if the box used to send the seat to Austin is not
at least 36 inches long. Seat damage to the nose can also happen if you
wrap the seat in plastic wrap so tight that it will survive the next
nuclear winter. The best way to ship a seat is
to put the seat in a garbage bag, and pack it so it doesn't
bounce around in shipping. I have never seen vinyl damage to a seat in
shipping and this includes seats that were thrown in boxes with no
protection at all. I have seen the plastic seat pans damaged because the
seat was wrapped tighter and better than fine china.
If you use a box from the local UPS store that is 20 x 20 x 36, you will
pay about $10.00 more than you need. Boxes larger than 36 x 20 x 15 will
be charged more due to their size. Boxes of this size are shipped based
on volume not weight. The more volume, the more it costs. The box we
recommend will hold a seat and a passenger backrest with enough room for
packaging.
As a final note, UPS shipping rates have gone up since the beginning of
the year. On average, shipping a seat runs around $50.00 for shipping
each way. US Postal service
often times costs less than UPS but it would be in your best interest to
check both carriers for the best rates.
